Come on an Aromatic Journey with our Lavender Soap!

We're celebrating the unique qualities and environmental benefits of our lavender scented soap. First launched in 1978, lavender was our first ever bar soap scent, and subsequently also added to our castile liquid soap range. Since 2017, the pure, natural, and organic blend of Lavandin and Lavender oils used in our products is sourced from Distillerie Bleu Provence in Provence, France, who use bee conscious technology for a more sustainable future.

“Lavender offers a rich, cultivated scent, that is passionate and refined. It is deep, rich, and lush. Our lavender is a truly beautiful and actively soothing scent that is much more complex than synthetic offerings.” (Lisa Bronner)

Distillerie Bleu Provence was first built in the 1930s and later renovated in 2010 to ensure it was equipped with more efficient and environmentally friendly processing equipment. In 1994, Christine and Philippe Soguel took over the operation of the essential oil distillery. Passionate about aromas and essences, they wanted to keep alive the traditional knowledge of scent production in the world-renowned Provence lavender growing region. In addition to providing lavender for Dr. Bronner’s, Distillerie Bleu Provence also supplies essential oils to internationally recognized brands like Dior and L’Occitane.

“We are proud to provide our signature oils for Dr. Bronner’s lavender scented soaps. The herbs are grown and harvested by organic farmers in the sun-kissed hills and mountains of Provence and distilled in Nyons,” explained Philippe Soguel, founder of Distillerie Bleu Provence. “Our traditional process imparts our oil blends with a delicious fragrance profile and experience, all while ensuring sustainability and soil health along the way. We have been recognized for decades because of the quality of our essential oils, which is a testament to our efforts at perfecting the art of growing lavender.”

So what makes Dr. Bronner’s Lavender truly special?

Dr. Bronner's lavender liquid and bar soap

Dr. Bronner’s became the largest personal care company certified under USDA’s National Organic Program and we are now also committed to having our supply chain become Regenerative Organic Certified. Gero Leson, Dr. Bronner’s Vice President of Special Operations, cultivated a relationship with Distillerie Bleu Provence to directly source organic Lavandin and Lavender for our lavender scented products.

Sourcing organic and fair trade essential oils from Distillerie Bleu Provence to create the lavender scent honours our commitments to produce the highest quality products through the integrity of our supply chain.

Highlights about the lavender scent used in our products include:

  • Bee Conscious Lavender — The innovative “Espieur” machine used during harvesting is designed to be friendly to bees. It moves slower than other methods – at only 3 km/h, compared to 5-7 km/h – and has a bee-repelling bar in front of the two flower pickers, to warn the bees of its arrival. This method has been known to impact at least 50% less bees than other methods.

  • Grown at High Altitude – Lavender plants thrive best at high altitudes because they have higher ester content. This increases the therapeutic components and relaxing properties of the essential oil. Distillerie Bleu Provence sources lavender grown at high altitude as this is known to produce the finest aromas of all lavender oils.

  • Appellation d’Origine Protégée (AOP) label — The lavender that Distillerie Bleu Provence uses has the prestigious Appellation d’Origine Protégée label (translation: Protected Designation of Origin), which means a product’s quality or characteristics are due to a specific geographical environment. This label shows the lavender harvested in Provence is of the highest quality, making it the most sought-after lavender in the world.

  • Fair For Life – Distillerie Bleu Provence and the many local farms they work with have formed an association known as ACE (Association Agroécologie et Commerce Equitable / Agroecology and Fair Trade Association). It has been certified fair trade under the Fair for Life program, also used by Dr. Bronner’s in smallholder projects in the southern hemisphere.
